Citizens against noise and pollution produced by nonessential helicopter flights in residential areas.

Thank you for getting involved to protect our right to peace and safety in our neighbors and communities.

The incessant nonnessential helicopter flights over our homes, schools and businesses is a demonstration of gross negligence from the tenants at the Saratoga County Airport. When the company Independent Helicopters LLC took to the sky above our homes, this was done …

... WITHOUT

According to Saratoga County's sublease agreement code, and our 2021 FOIL, Independent Helicopters LLC was never given written permission from Saratoga County to operate as an aeronautical service at the Saratoga County airport.

The County’s lack of responsibility to follow and enforce their own code, has put undo burden on Tax Payers.

We, the Tax Payers, should have been notified and given the opportunity to attend a public meeting regarding a flight school we are all directly affected by.

As of January 7, 2022 there have been over 1500 accidents or incidents involving the Robinson R22, R44 Helicopters, 386 of them fatal accidents resulting in 676 deaths.

Independent Helicopters, originally from Stewart International Airport, have setup shop in our backyards instructing inexperienced "students" in their Robinson R22 and R44 helicopters.

Noise & Mental Health

Helicopters rank especially high in causing undesirable noise. Eight different studies have found that the annoyance created by a helicopter does not correlate with the decibels it registers. The helicopter’s unique sound, created by blade vortex interaction, causes people to rate its sound level as much as 10 dB’s higher than it actually registers, doubling the noise impact. This would place perceived helicopter noise at around 97 dB, or a whopping 30 dB’s over the generally accepted noise level of residential areas.

Use of Toxic 100LL Fuel

At present, there are no regulations that apply to emissions from piston engine aircraft that use leaded fuel. All forms of lead are toxic if inhaled or ingested. Lead can affect human health in several ways, including effects on the nervous system, red blood cells and cardiovascular and immune systems. Infants and young children are especially sensitive to even low levels of lead, which may contribute to behavioral and learning problems and lower IQ due to their developing nervous systems.

History of Deadly Crashes

The Robinson R44 is a top choice among flight schools, sightseeing companies, police departments and recreational pilots, and were involved in 42 fatal crashes in the U.S. from 2006 to 2016, more than any other civilian helicopter, according to a Times analysis of National Transportation Safety Board accident reports. That translates to 1.6 deadly accidents per 100,000 hours flown — a rate nearly 50% higher than any other of the dozen most common civilian models whose flight hours are tracked by the FAA.

When our health and safety are at risk, we have the right to hold the responsible parties liable. Living near an airport does not exempt us from these basic rights.

Gross negligence is being imposed on all of us and our quality of life, just to serve the few.
